This is such a beautiful idea - and I have not heard of it before. It is funny because naturally I find 3pm a real 'in between' time mainly because it is the time (roughly) that the baby wakes from her nap and the lunch time 'pause' has occurred, and we are ready for our next round of the day. I always feel like a little chocolate at this time (has to be at least 85% dark) and it does seem to be a milestone time in the daily life. I will think of it a little more consciously from now on Carmen, thank you.
The snow looks utterly magical, I know it isn't always convenient but it does bring to life the world in a different way. I really hope we get some decent snowfall here in the UK this year. My 4 year old loves it.
Thank you so much for sharing my piece - I am so grateful to you, and to the support you give me here. xxx
Sweet Lauren, thank you! For your kindness, support, showing up for everyone on Substack, for sharing your practices as well as inspiring people to take care of themselves and be intentional with their life and business. Your kind words truly warm my heart! 🌟
It's so wonderful to hear how 3 pm resonates with you, especially as a 'in between' time with the baby's nap and gearing up for the next part of the day. A little dark chocolate sounds like the perfect daily milestone treat! 🍫 I love dark chocolate too, the darker, the better, and salted - absolute heaven! And I'm with your 4-year-old, snow does bring pure magic. Fingers crossed for some delightful snowfall in the UK, I remember that in some of the winters I lived there we were blessed with it's gentleness for a few days! ❄️
And love the concept of considering what we do within a particular window of time. 3pm is often where I experience a dip, so it’s either a nap with the littlest or a hot chocolate to keep me going. I think I’d benefit far more from moving ⚡️
Yesss wintery vibes here ❄️ Thanks a bunch for your sweet words! Ah, the 3 pm dip, totally get that! Napping or sipping hot chocolate sounds so cozy. I used to have a habit of putting shoes and going on quick walks between meetings or breaks but somehow lost that habit in recent months. Some stretches around 3 PM sound like a good plan. How's the weather at the Scottish borders right now (apart from rain any snow in sight)?
I also tried this, but with a good ol' reminder on my phone at 5pm. I skipped it many times, but this is a great reminder to retake that habit... slowly. 😊
Yes right, the reminders via phone alarm can be super useful. And yessss skipping them is also party of the process. I had phone reminders for some time and always jumped totally taken by surprise although I set them haha. I usually have all notifications off 🤭
I love this idea, Carmen, thank you! It reminds me of how the monks have prayer at certain times throughout the day. I'm going to take your advice and try this. No matter what I'm doing, I'll pause at 3pm and sit quietly, and probably connect with my guides. And also...Holy cow! That's the most snow I've ever seen!
I'm so glad you're inspired to adopt this reflective practice at 3pm daily Jenna. I definitely heard the story about it at the right time. How has it been going for you? Sometimes I remember, sometimes I forget but for me it was key to not set an alarm this week. And about the snow - it's quite a sight, right? Sadly warmer temperatures and lots of rain melted it ALL. Now our region is experiencing some floods from the mountain rivers.
The most stunning snow pictures and I loved your evocative descriptions of them!
Oooh 3pm! It’s funny, I remember when I was in the office every day, I remember thinking that 3pm is near the end of the school day here in the UK but it was only just mid-afternoon in the office where my working day finished earliest at 6pm and so not home til at least 7pm. Now it makes me think how incompatible working and parenting school age children is without a lot of additional help and childcare!
In my reality now, 3pm still has that mid-afternoon feeling as I don’t usually get a break from my day of mothering til 7pm when my children go to sleep (and this is usually short-lived as my son seems to wake up after about an hour and needs much assistance to go back to sleep...!) anyway, 3pm often requires a boost of energy to keep up the momentum for the rest of the afternoon. I am absolutely with Lauren on the dark choc and accompany this with a hot drink when I can! Thank you for highlighting this point in the day which I will now honour and tune in to what we need at that moment in time.
Thank you so much for including my recent INSIDER interview in your post, I really appreciate it xx
This is an interesting and refreshing way to think of and approach mindfulness. It's something I've struggled with but the idea of simplifying it to simply noticing what's happening at a certain time feels a lot more grounded.
Also, love the winter wonderland photos and totally jealous. Nothing but rain so far in Boston!
Thank you for your thoughtful words, Angela, welcome to my corner of Substack! 🌟 I'm so glad to hear that the approach resonates with you. Making mindfulness and intentional living accessible to everyone is at the core of my mission so I loved the story of 3 PM. It's all about creating a space where we all feel seen, no matter where we are on our journey.
And about the winter wonderland photos, I hear you—sending some cozy vibes your way! ☃️ But I'm sure snow will fall in Boston sooner or later or did my geographical knowledge play a trick on me?

Ahhh it’s such a pleasure to share it. Honestly it gives me so much life.
Oh yes to dark salted chocolate.... mmmmmmmm I could eat that now. Xxxx
Beautiful wintery photographs ✨

We had lots of snow last week. Today was very cold but the rain chased the ice away! I’m hoping for a white Christmas. It always feels more magical 💫
