Interesting to read that catering to the dead, making rituals, and feeding them is/was still alive in parts of Europe. I didn’t know that. I thought it was only visiting graveyards and leaving flowers.
So many traditions and rituals here, many differ from village to village. And the further you go away from the big cities, the more of the forgotten ways of remembering is still practiced. ✨
Thanks for writing a great article in the first place, Luiza :)
Yayyy fellow German speaker 💕 glad my post invited you on a journey down memory lane.
I only returned last year after 5+ years abroad and 10 years away from the Alps. feel like that’s impacting my rediscovery of rituals and traditions a bit.
I really loved reading this and could sense the magic of your childhood experiences of this time of year.
I am totally with you on the letting go of theoretical knowledge and living instead. I am the kind of person that feels I need to know everything on a subject to be able to talk about it, which is frankly not possible. Also learning it doesn’t necessarily mean you *know* it in your body...so I have been trying to move towards my own embodied experience instead...
I love the idea behind the writer’s village and can’t wait to explore more, thank you so much for including me, it is an honour! xx
Thank you lovely for sharing your post, first of all. The Village would be empty without the wonderful writers and readers of course xx
Secondly, Yesss when will we finally trust that we don’t need all the knowledge in this world to be able to write, speak, and hold space for others? It’s a journey that requires so much patience and self- love I find. Is there anything you find particular helpful that helps you repattern the thinking, doing and being with all this?
I love your musings here on this season, especially in relation to how you grew up. I remember spending Halloween in Italy visiting friends that lived there when I was a kid and trick-or-treating or dressing up was not a thing. It was so wild to me coming from a traditional American Halloween, but I loved that it wasn't about that over there.
I can't wait to dive into some of the writers you've mentioned here that I haven't read yet! How exciting! And thank you so much for sharing my own post!
Ohhh I love this childhood story of yours, Hunter! Isn’t it magical when we realise as little ones that people do things differently in other countries, so fun when we get the chance to explore the world outside of our childhood bubble.
Kind of the reverse story to me learning about Halloween as a young adult lol. Of course innkeeper from movies, but the real deal is still different.
Enjoy the Writers Village reads, when you get to them x
I loved hearing about your remembering a from younger years, and we have travelled many times to the area of Selva, Val Gardena, which I think might be in the same region?!?
Thank you for bringing the village of writers to life, what a gorgeous thing to share and I’m so grateful to be included alongside such amazing souls.
Yesss that region you mentioned is close to Bolzano just like the place we were always staying at that is not too far from Lana and further north than Bolzano. Both just different valleys. Such a gorgeous area of Italy, isn’t it? 🥰
I’m dreaming of hosting a retreat in that region one day. So many special memories and places.
One of my most-liked pieces this fall is an essay that started as a note to myself in the middle of the night, when I lay alone in my van on the shores of an alpine lake in northern British Columbia. I was driving home from Alaska and reflecting on my bucket-list road trip with pride that I made it happen.
So, I offer up the simple ritual of celebrating ourselves. Here is my version of “Celebrating Me”:
What a beautiful piece of writing full of love, intention, slowness and childhood memories. Reading through yours took me back to mine .. the walks in the cold, the lanterns casting light and sparkles in children's eyes, the chestnuts, visiting cemeteries .. thank you for sharing xx feeling all nostalgic now and cannot wait to be back home to bask in some memories there.
Thank you also for including me in this list of inspiring writers lovely, I appreciate you and your generous heart. Looking forward to making my way through the entire list. Sending you much love xx
