Well, I didn’t know you started this movement but I saw the postcards people received being shared on Notes and because I love sending postcards anyway I decided to do the same for my subscribers. Now I know I have you to thank!
I didn’t announce it on Notes, only on Chat, and I don’t have many subscribers so the takers weren’t many but I am so happy to do it for those who sent me their address I don’t care about the numbers. Actually, since I’m new at writing to strangers maybe it was better to start small 😃.
Welcome to this space if it’s still relatively new to you, Sara! I do think I’ve seen your profile pop up a few times 😊
I guess I “started” in my corner of the internet but of course other people may have done the same in their little corner and we’re not aware of each other.
The more people send postcards, the better, don’t you think? More smiles, more joy, more surprises and analog connection.
So glad it inspired you to send some postcards too! The numbers don’t matter, only the people 💖
I loved the idea from the beginning and it is so lovely to hear more of your thinking behind it. Thank you for all you do, your thoughtfulness brings joy to everyone it touches. I felt such a connection receiving a postcard from you, especially as you also know the area I live in and hopefully could picture the streets as you wrote the address! Much love and thank you also for sharing your thoughts on writing here only when you feel the words need to be spoken xx
I did exactly that, picture the streets and also my favourite almond-chocolate croissant I sometimes got at Gail’s. 💖 we still haven’t finalised our London travel plans but I do hope we’ll come over for a few days in the next few weeks x
Ohh I love this so much! I'm making a comeback to Substack after a few months away and this was such a wonderful heartwarming first read! 🥰 Sending postcards and receiving them is one I used to do, but somewhere throughout the years, I stopped. It's definitely something that needs to come back again, I shall have a ponder what I can do to amplify this magic 🤗✨
You definitely inspired me!💕 I truly believe that in this world most people don’t expect these kind of gestures where they receive without owing anything back. So they have double the effect.💕💕
I love the idea of sending postcards to strangers. Also, handwritten letters and postcards are in general a lost art and it's time revive these practices.
Really beautiful idea. I love the thought of doing something like this, though I kept wondering how comfortable people were giving out their address if they don’t have a PO Box. That aside, this sounds like something I’d love to try!
In my opinion, and I may be naive, if someone wants to hop on a plane and ring my doorbell they deserve at least a cup of tea. What's the worst that could happen? Sneaky subscriptions to advertising I never asked for?
I think maybe I listen to a lot of True Crime / watched a lot of Unsolved Mysteries growing up because my thoughts tend to go towards the absolute worst when I think of strangers having my door! 😦
(for the record, your version sounds lovely —making new friends over tea and a shared bond! I love that!)
The history behind postcards! I feel so lucky to be part of this, you made a legacy over here! I think I will write a post about my postcard-club experience and share my favourite articles as well. I think you are absolutely right, one should write what and if they feel like. we're too tied up with numbers and virtual presence... let's slow down.
Thank you Barbs for inspiring me to write this piece and for being part of it all! Please do tag me I’m spending very minimal reading time on here right now so I may miss it.
A legacy - a big word! I’d like to hope that other amazing people on substack had similar ideas and got people together behind postcard writing. I hope it’s a grassroots movement 😅🥰
This is wonderful, I really like this tradition and custom you revived here! It's so humane and valuable. And that phrase you have up here... pure gold: Never be blinded by the online world. 💛
The next level would be in-person meetings. Oh, wait... 😉

Ohh that’s so interesting how they take long to one part of the country and less to another 😂
Carmen, that, inspires me A LOT !
Because, i am also traveling right now, and i am pretty sure my community will really enjoy this.
